Unlikely winter sales of attacking players ruled out with Chelsea still desperate for depth

Chelsea have a strong squad, and Thomas Tuchel has now had a year working with most of his players. The idea that some of them might be sold in January, with the season at its busiest, always seemed far fetched, and now looks increasingly so.

It’s natural that rumour writers want to promote the idea that Chelsea are looking to buy or sell this January – and we certainly wouldn’t rule out some minor tweaks here or there, but as James Robson writes in the Evening Standard today, don’t expect much.

He says that Tuchel “would prefer to keep” both Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech “until the summer at least.” The recent Covid wave has reminded us that half a squad can be wiped out for a week in the blink of an eye, and depth is everything.

Chelsea fans are frustrated with both of those players to a certain degree, but we don’t think Tuchel is done with them yet, and unless the unlikely scenario arises where a top class replacement is available next month, don’t get your hopes up about them going anywhere.
