“We will do it” – Chelsea captain says players are ready for another social media boycott

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta took a step away from on the pitch operations this week as he sat down with CNN to discuss abuse and racism in the sport.

Players across the game earlier this year switched off all their social media platforms for three days in a boycott to protest these companies for not doing more to tackle social media abuse.

Of course, whilst it might have made a difference in some ways, abuse has still continued to occur frequently and social media companies have failed to act once again.

Azpilicueta has confirmed that players will do the boycott again if they feel it is necessary as these big companies continue to ignore the effect it is having on the minds of some players in the game.

The right back believes that with their millions of followers, it is the best way to get the message across.

When asked if another boycott was something players would consider, Azpilicueta replied: “If we have to, yes of course. Social media is in our lives and as I said before, the clubs, Premier League, players, we are part of it.
“We have millions of followers from everywhere, but if it’s the only way that we can get the attention that we want and get the social media platform’s commitment to make it better, of course. You know, we did it a few months ago and now we are waiting [if] we have to do it again.
“In that moment, when we decided to boycott, it was something really quick. So it’s not something that you need a few months to work on. I think if the action is needed, yes [we will do it].”
