Romelu Lukaku’s interview with Sky Italia has been the Chelsea story of the month, perhaps the season, distracting everyone from even last night’s brilliant game against Liverpool.
The striker was left out of the squad for that game, and has today had talks with Thomas Tuchel and senior members of the club hierarchy – hopefully agreeing a strategy to end the whole scenario and move on as soon as possible.
According to Dean Jones, the striker is “surprised” by the toxic reaction to the interview, where he flirted with a return to Inter while he was still in his prime, and also criticised his usage at Chelsea.
It’s pretty astonishing for a top footballer – and an intelligent one at that – to not realise what kind of impact these quotes tend to have. But while it does make him look pretty naive, it does at least explain to some extent why he thought he might get away with it.
