Players these days are very clever with their contracts, and they know the power of negotiating when your deal is running short.
It’s a gamble of course, especially with a young player, risking career affecting or even ending injury, on a small salary, hoping to cash in down the line.
According to Nathan Gissing, a Chelsea blogger with some good connections at the club, that’s exactly what Birmingham defender Nico Gordon is doing.
#Birmingham City defender Nico Gordon’s contract expires in 2023 and has interest from many top clubs including Chelsea, Man United, Spurs, Arsenal & other clubs. #CFC scouts have attended Gordon’s last 3 games.

He’s got just over a year left to run on his deal, and the big teams are circling. The 19 year old made his debut in 2020 after the Covid break, and has now racked up 10 Championship appearances, with 6 coming this season.
Chelsea have apparently watched 3 of those games, but they have serious competition – Man U, Spurs and Arsenal are all mentioned as other teams with an interest.
The Blues have sold so many talented young defenders – what’s the point in signing one?
