Why Real Madrid are struggling to make concrete Rudiger offer

Chelsea are in a difficult situation with Antonio Rudiger. The defender’s contract runs out in the summer and it looked for a long time like he would be leaving on a free.

Over this season there seemed like there’s been a shift towards him staying at the club, but then the sanctions which hit Roman Abramovich this year struck, and suddenly Chelsea have found themselves unable to sign off on any contacts at all.

That should have given other clubs the chance to definitively make their deal, but none of them have yet confirmed his signing. One interested team is Real Madrid, who love to hoover up big name players on free transfers. But they have a dilemma of their own, as The Athletic have reported today.

Los Blancos are still intent on signing Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland, and until they have something concrete in place with one of them, they’re not able to offer anything concrete to Rudiger.

That might just buy Chelsea the time they need to get a deal sorted out.
