Chelsea sudden interest in Cucurella explained by Tuchel’s tactical idea

Chelsea’s sudden bid for Marc Cucurella has had many fans scratching their heads over the last 24 hours, given the Blues have three first team options at left back already.

But the ideal that he could play as the left sided player in a back 3 is what’s behind the odd-sounding move, according to an in depth piece on Chelsea’s window in the Athletic today.

After losing two centre backs at the start of the summer, manager Thomas Tuchel has been keen to find a natural left footer who can play on the left of his three, as well as back up Ben Chilwell at left wing back. Cucurella could be that man.

It would also definitively free up Marcos Alonso and Emerson for transfers away – not that there’s been much interest in a permanent move for either of them thus far.

Once this deal is done, we can really start offering them around.
