Chelsea ‘remain interested’ in player they had €80m offer ‘refused’

Chelsea have made a few ambitious offers for players during the summer past after the new owners came in.

They wanted to get to work right away and try and bring in some of the best talents to immediately improve the squad. They ended up spending around £250m on new players, but it could have easily been more.

They had other offers and proposals rejected by clubs as they searched for specific players for specific positions to upgrade the team.

One player they tried to sign was RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. And in his Daily Briefing, exclusively for CaughtOffside’s Substack, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that in the summer, Leipzig refused an €80m offer from Chelsea for Gvardiol.

He also confirms that Chelsea remain interested in signing the young defender going forward, but it is unclear if they will be going back in with a new offer or not.

Romano said: “Chelsea are interested and have been since last summer.

“They wanted him for 2023 in an €80m deal plus add-ons but Leipzig refused.

“At the moment I’m told Chelsea remain interested but there’s still nothing agreed; the race is open, nothing will happen now as he’s 100% focused on World Cup.”
