Dreadful xG stats show just how bad Chelsea were in Arsenal loss

Chelsea have been beaten by Arsenal after a truly dire performance at home.

In the end it was a 1-0 defeat, with the away side’s goal coming from a corner after some truly pathetic defending from Chelsea. It could easily have been 2 or 3 nil however, as the stats bear out.

The Expected Goals – a way of measuring how good the chances a team had were – says that Chelsea had 0.24 to Arsenal’s 2.38. That means Chelsea would have had to play more than 4 games to create enough to be worth a goal, while the Gunners had the chances to score well over 2 goals today.

Stats don’t tell the whole story, but in this case they totally mirror what we saw on the pitch – a non existent attacking performance combined with inexcusable defensive weakness.

We are in deep, deep trouble now, after a run of wins over weak teams that gave the impression we’re any good.
