Edouard Mendy has already turned down one new contract as Chelsea seek to give keeper a raise

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation is back in the spotlight.

After seeming settled a year ago with Edouard Mendy in place and in form, it’s in a much more precarious state now. The Senegal stopper’s bad form to start the season led to questions about his place as number one, and an injury gave Kepa Arrizabalaga the chance to step in.

Now the Spaniard is injured in turn, with Mendy set to return from the start tomorrow night.

The former Rennes goalkeeper is still on just £50,000 per week on his original contract, and there have been talks about an extension. Matt Law’s piece in the Telegraph today reports that Mendy has already turned down one improved offer.

Given he’s lost his form and his place in the team since then, that might be a decision he regrets.  On the other hand, if his restoration to the team tomorrow leads to more opportunities, he could yet get an even bigger and better raise.
