Timo Werner’s incredible praise for top centre back makes us sad we haven’t signed him

Former Blue Timo Werner has returned to RB Leipzig this season, where he’s playing with long term Chelsea transfer target Josko Gvardiol.

Werner’s assessment of the Croatian star was amazing, and has really made us sad that he’s looking less and less likely to come to Chelsea. The Blues have been crying out for a physically dominant central defender to play alongside Thiago Silva since Antonio Rudiger left in the summer, but seem to have settled on the cheaper option of Benoit Badiashile ultimately.

“He can shoot left and right, pass, cross and hit diagonal balls. I don’t know what he can’t do. He’s very fast and at only 20 years old has a body like I’ve never seen before,” Werner said of his impressive young colleague in quotes picked up by the Metro.

“What I find most important about him: he is incredibly friendly, polite, down-to-earth and therefore completely clear-headed.”

“I can understand why everyone wants him.”

You never know of course, especially with how this ownership has spent so furiously since arriving.

But the fact we swooped for Badishaile this month gave us the strong sense that we are moving on from the situation where Gvardiol is our top target, and when you consider how much Leipzig are going to want for him and how many positions we still need to strengthen, it feels increasingly unlikely.
