Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been out of Graham Potter’s team in recent weeks, and today saw him omitted from the Champions League squad entirely, and he’s not in the squad tonight either.
It’s an astonishing new low in a fall from grace for a player who was only signed in the summer. On Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher was clear with his thoughts on the situation – “Aubameyang is obviously a player he doesn’t want.”
Well, if that wasn’t clear before, it is now.
🗣️ “That’s the problem he’s going to have. Aubameyang is obviously a player he doesn’t want so that wouldn’t be a too difficult of a decision. That was someone who was brought in almost a bit of a panic.”@Carra23 on Chelsea leaving Aubameyang out of their UCL squad. ❌ pic.twitter.com/HsZ5iaFEPl

Frankly, it’s hard to disagree with Carragher here. We don’t know whether to blame Thomas Tuchel (who had worked with the Aubameyang before) or the owners, but it was very obvious to most fans from the moment it was suggested that this was going to be a terrible signing, and if anything it’s ended up even worse than we feared.
Kai Havertz has simply not been good up front – yet he starts every week at the moment, just because of how poor Auba has been.
