Chelsea have had their problems this season (that’s putting it mildly), but one thing they did have going for them is a nice partnership developing between January signing Benoit Badiashile and Thiago Silva at centre back.
That’s why today’s selection is so baffling. Graham Potter had broken up that partnership to get Kalidou Koulibaly (who has struggled hugely since arriving in the summer) in alongside Silva.
The Koulibaly-Silva partnership is what we will be seeing in the Champions League, because Badiashile hasn’t been registered in that competition. Perhaps this is Potter’s attempt to get some chemistry going between the two ahead of a crucial second leg against Dortmund?
Either way, it shows what a mess we’re in if we’re playing an inferior combination in the league just because the optimal combination isn’t available in Europe.
Given the 38 year old Thiago Silva needs a rest every third game, it also means we’re going to be switching between 3 different combinations – not ideal for a side already suffering from making too many changes.

Chelsea should go back to 3 4 3, it is okay to sacrifice one of the forwards so that chillwell and james resume their battering of opponents

Why leave a player like Badiashile and play Kourbouly beggars belief desperation stakes chucking on auba and mount on 77 minutes, why did he not take zyiech off after that yellow card with the prospect of getting a red in the 2nd half, potter is clueless he doesnt know his best 11 keeps changing the starting 11 no clues how to change a game that he is obviously loosing i think he was punching at Brighton which made him look better than he is, why do i say that? look at Brighton since potter left they are actually doing better without him, he is not a top 6 prem manager,Roman would of gotten shot by now but to be honest he would not of sacked Tuchel thats where its gone wrong for Chelsea we are closer to the relegation zone (10) ponts off than we are to the top 4 , (12) points sack potter now before it is too late
