Cesar Azpilicueta hospitalised after horror head-kick

The awful feeling at Stamford Bridge today was made significantly worse when Cesar Azpilicueta was stretchered off with a head injury.

Azpi was caught square on the top of the head by an attempted bicycle kick in the area. It made a sickening crunch, and the camaeras wouldn’t show it again.

He was down on the pitch for a full 11 minutes, and there were fears for the worst. After he was stretchered off to a huge ovation, the players tried to get on with the game, but the Chelsea captain was in everyone’s minds.

The good news is that he is apparently conscious. Joao Castelo Branco is reporting direct from the Stamford Bridge press room and he says the Spaniard has been taken directly to hospital for tests. Let’s pray for a big bruise rather than the horror of a fractured skull, which might well be a career ended for the veteran.
