Chelsea keen to secure new long term contract for exceptional defensive prospect

Matt Law has had a busy morning, and one of the nuggets included in his piece about Mateo Kovacic is about a potential new contract for Levi Colwill.

After a breakout loan with Huddersfield in the Championship last year, Colwill has stepped up to the top flight with Brighton, and after a few months working his way into the team, he’s now looking like one of the best young defenders in the country.

No wonder then that Chelsea are keen to tie him down long term. They’re pretty crowded at centre back at the moment, with Benoit Badiashile and Kalidou Kouliably joining in the last 6 months, but Colwill has the potential to be the best of the lot, even if he does have to wait for his chance.

Law adds that Chelsea want Colwill to return to the club next season, once he’s on his new deal, and adds that that puts a question mark over the long term future of Koulibaly, who has had some shaky moments since arriving from Napoli last summer.
