Chelsea need composure not a number 9 says former player

Craig Burley has never been popular among Chelsea fans, but on ESPN today he made an interesting point about the team’s issues up front.

Last night seemed to sum up the whole season – perhaps the last couple of seasons. Chelsea made loads of chances and didn’t score them. The moans, inevitably, after the game were that the Blues should have bought a striker.

But Burley’s point is that, even a non striker should have put some of those away. He listed some of the best opportunities the Blues had in the game and pointed out that you don’t need Pippo Inzaghi in the side to finish them. Joao Felix alone had two really presentable chances, and it was a lack of “care and attention in the final third” that the team were missing, not a striker.

Of course it wouldn’t hurt to have a natural finisher in there – on the other hand did you see how Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku got on with their spells in the team?

Burley might be on to something here.
