Chelsea’s dreadful corner marking a sure sign of bad coaching

Chelsea were not exactly threatening in the late stages of Sunday’s game against Spurs, but while the score remained 1-0, they always had a chance of getting something.

That chance was killed off in the 82nd minute, when Tottenham scored from a corner to make it 2-0 and effectively end the game. Tottenham flicked on a corner at the near post for Harry Kane to finish at the far – something we’ve seen them do several times already this season.

The Athletic have a nice piece up today about our issues defending corners. We’ve now conceded 7 goals from corners this season, more than the last two seasons combined.

Defending corners requires good planning and coaching in training, and then organisation and leadership on the pitch. It’s something that is a real indicator of whether a team is well coached or not, and doing this badly is a damning indictment of Graham Potter and his coaching staff.
