Chelsea’s lowest rated player against Southampton as academy man struggles again

Chelsea struggled again yesterday and lost 1-0 at home to bottom of the table Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

There were very few, if any good performances, but one player in particular really struggled, both using the eye test and WhoScored‘s rating system.

Mason Mount ended up with a 5.9 rating, the only sub 6 rating on the pitch.

He’s having a torrid time this season, and we had high hopes for him yesterday. After a break from starting, against a weaker side, he had the perfect chance to thrive.

Instead, stuck out on the left wing, it was a long day for Mason once again. It was the first time we’ve seen him really struggling mentally, avoiding the ball and hiding at times. He just couldn’t get going, despite being fresh.

We still have great faith he will be back to his best – but this rapidly collapsing season isn’t the place to find form and confidence for any player.

  1. The best thing for Mason right now would be to settle his contract issue and get his head where it (obviously) needs to be. With Utd having just announced a 300k/week offer to Marcus Rashford, Mount is delusional if he thinks he’s worth that kind of money and the longer he drives for it the worse he looks both on and off the field. He’s really at risk of setting back his career if he can’t manage to remember that performances come first (and the money will follow).
