Joe Cole will be presenting BT Sport’s coverage of Chelsea’s Champions League game against Dortmund tonight, and it will be interesting to see whether Mason Mount is picked for the game.
The midfielder was rested at the weekend after a run of bad form, and tonight provides a good opportunity to get him back in the mix – if Graham Potter chooses to.
Cole spoke to Football.London ahead of tonight’s game, and took the chance to emphasise his positive feelings about Mount.
“It’s been well documented what I think of Mason Mount, I think he’s a fantastic footballer and he’s so important for the club on and off the pitch,” Cole explained.
“He’s developed into a leader in my eyes when he plays. I think the beauty of Mason Mount, his performances don’t dip below a seven. I think he does the basics really well, he’s very clever. He’s played a lot of football but I have no problem with Mason Mount, I think he’s going to play a massive part for Chelsea in this end of the season. His experience of winning this trophy, he was brilliant in the final versus Man City, he will be raring to go.”
Sadly we would say we have seen some Mount performances dip below a 7 this season, but we take his point. Through his career as a whole, the midfielder has been a model of consistency.
We think a regular break from first team action will be just what Mount needs, and whether he starts tonight or this weekend, we expect him to shine sooner rather than later.
