Many fans have given up on Chelsea’s hopes of reaching the top four now, but club captain Cesar Azpilicueta refuses to give up and says that it is still in their own hands, in a recent interview with The Athletic.
I won’t rule out this season,” Azpilicueta said. “At the moment we are not where we want to be. We are out of two cups, but we still have the two biggest ones — the Premier League and the Champions League.
“No one expected us to win the Champions League in 2021. In the Premier League, we have to have a very strong second half of the season to reach the top four, but it’s in our hands. I refuse to give up on that.
“Am I stressing this to my team-mates? Yes, yes! I understand it’s difficult to be positive in moments like this, but I will never allow us to just give it away, like we don’t have a chance. We can do it.
“We have players coming back from injury. We have new signings. The ambition from the new ownership is very clear. We are not where we want to be, but we will work to get it back.
“We have to make it a success.”
He’s got some great points there and to be honest I’m still holding some hope personally that we might still be able to qualify for UCL football this season, which is so important. But the performances have to improve and the main thing, we have to start scoring more goals!
