Joe Cole says Enzo should have fouled Adeyemi to prevent Dortmund goal

Joe Cole was on BT Sport tonight after the game, watching the Borussia Dortmund goal that beat Chelsea.

Karim Adeyemi broke from his own box after a corner and ran the length of the pitch. Enzo Fernandez went with him the whole way, but couldn’t catch him.

Former Chelsea winger Cole insisted that the right move was to bring Adeyemi down while he had the chance. After he got into stride, it was game over.

Cole has a point. It was perhaps a little naive of him, and slowing the striker down in any way possible would probably have been worth it if he could avoid a red card in the process.

We will need a little more of that ruthless cutting edge to win this competition again.

On the other hand, Adeyemi is so ridiculously quick, maybe even closing the yard he needed to get a shove away was beyond Enzo.

  1. Joe Cole giving defensive advice, lol!

Enzo was the last defender and would have almost certainly seen red (missing the second leg). In the final analysis, given the instant impact he’s made in the team, I’d much rather concede the one goal and have him available for the home leg. Besides, if we can’t manage at least a one-goal (and, hopefully a two-goal) victory at home then we don’t deserve to go through anyway.
