“Nothing more than speculation” – Transfer expert addresses Chelsea and Man City rumour

Chelsea and Manchester City have been involved in a fresh new transfer rumour this week that has been much discussed.

A report from 90min claimed that Chelsea were considering a shake-up at left-back and could look to sign Joao Cancelo from Manchester City during the summer transfer window.

Of course, Chelsea only recently spent a chunk of money on Marc Cucurella from Brighton, adding to England international Ben Chilwell in that area of the pitch. They also have Ian Maatsen impressing out on loan who is left back.

It doesn’t seem like it should be a pressing position the club need to prioritise as of right now, and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has given his verdict via his CaughtOffside via his Substack column.

Romano plays it down as nothing more than speculation at this point in time. He said: “Joao Cancelo has played three or four games for Bayern now. In my opinion, it’s mad to get the rumours around now. Too early, people should let him play for Bayern. Chelsea were not in talks for Cancelo in January when he was available and at the moment from what I understand, there’s nothing more than speculation.”

So one rumour that we can shelve for now then!

  1. What about Lewis Hall?

Seems like Cancelo went from setting the world on fire with City early in the season to persona non grata really quickly. Why would we be interested in a guy who, it would appear, has some attitude issues when we’re in the midst of a youth-based rebuild? Bringing in malcontent into a squad (even an extraordinarily talented one) can be a risk even in a veteran side that’s well settled (and winning). We’re anything but! Chasing Cancelo seems silly, as does spending on (another) LB when we have way bigger needs at striker (and even at goalkeeper).
