“Now the window has shut” – Reporter gives latest on Chelsea contract situation

Chelsea have a few in-house situations to sort out going forward, and they are already on it according to the latest report.

There has been so much spoken about the current contract situations at the club and how long some of the negotiations are taking.

But it seems that a lot of the talks for new contracts slowed down, or even stopped, during the January transfer window because club chiefs were so busy with transfer deals.

But according to Si & Dan Talk Chelsea insider Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are now continuing talks with midfielder Mason Mount over extending his contract at the club.

Writing in his latest exclusive and extensive column on a number of situations at the club, Jacobs said: “Contract talks with Mount will continue now the window has shut. Chelsea and Mount are still someway apart, and that’s normal, especially given the season Mount had in 2021/22. Mount also has a bit of leverage because the Liverpool interest in him is genuine.

“It’s not true anything major (not in a new sense anyway) has broken down. It’s just an ongoing process: Chelsea want to ensure Mount stays and does so within their new wage structure. This will include a cut in terms if Chelsea don’t make the Champions League.

“February should provide more clarity and I think that will in turn help Mount’s form as well. It must be unsettling to have the extension hanging over him. Mount’s contract expires in summer 2024, but suitors will be circling for this summer and, as flattering as that is, it can also be distracting.”

The last bit is so essential, because Mount’s performances on the pitch this season have not been good enough. So if this is to do with off-field noise, then it needs to be sorted out as soon as possible because Chelsea need Mount back to top form.
