Ahead of the Merseyside derby today, the Daily Mail have quotes from Gody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool in the summer.
Manchester United chased him for a long time, and were expected to bring him in as a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement. But things worked out slightly unexpectedly – as is so often the case in football.
In the end, Gakpo swerved Man U and went to Liverpool, but it seems there was interest from all over. In the interview he says he was close to a move to Leeds in the summer, before staying put, and adds that in January “there was also Chelsea… but I had my mind made up.”
It seems Chelsea contacted every young attacking player in Europe in the last few months. When Gakpo went to Liverpool, we swooped for his teammate Noni Madueke. He looks a talent too, though neither he nor Gakpo have quite hit the ground running yet.
