Top sporting director set to leave Monaco 6 months after failed Chelsea approach

Paul Mitchell is set to leave Monaco at the end of the season, L’Equipe are reporting.

The sporting director is regarded as among the world’s best and will be in hot demand if he does depart. Chelsea made efforts to bring him in as part of their recruitment team in the Autumn, but in the end settled for poaching Laurence Stewart, one of Mitchell’s subordinates.

Manchester United and Liverpool are both being most strongly linked with a move for former Southampton and Spurs man Mitchell, but it’s interesting to consider Chelsea’s position in this. Was it their attempts to sign him that have caused him to push for an exit? Could he yet come here in the summer?

Or is it all just a coincidence? It seems unlikely he would have turned us down back in October if he was keen on a Premier League return then, so what has changed?
