Update on Cesar Azpilicueta after captain receives horror concussion

Cesar Azpilicueta has played a crazy number of games for Chelsea, but there can’t have been many scarier moments throughout his time at the club than the sound of a boot cracking off his skull on Saturday.

The right back was down unconscious and then stretchered off after 12 minutes.

The good news is that he’s alright, and was back at training today observing. Chelsea released the following statement on their website to update all the worried fans on their captain’s condition.

“Following a concussion injury sustained during Saturday’s game against Southampton, César Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital and is recovering well at Cobham.

The club’s medical team are closely monitoring César’s condition, adhering to the important concussion protocols in place to ensure his safety.

César observed training today, before he starts working towards returning to the pitch.”

Azpilicueta was playing in the game at the weekend to give Reece James a rest, and that is at least the good news – James will be fresh to play this weekend, and probably again in midweek after that against Dortmund.

That gives Azpi plenty of time to recover before he’s needed as James’ replacement again.

It seems he’s got off lightly – thank god for that,
