Chelsea this season has become a very toxic club full of drama and controversy. There is a lot being written about them right now and criticism aimed at the new ownership.
Of course, the results and performances on the pitch have been terrible, and the club are set to hire their fourth manager in a year come the summer, fifth if you want to include interim Bruno Salter. It’s all been a little bit crazy at Stamford Bridge this season.
But it’s very easy to write and talk about them when they are down, and I wouldn’t expect them to still be down come this time next year as they look to build a squad to challenge at the top again.
A lot has been made about how large the squad is, and that is certainly a warranted criticism.
BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand is the latest one to offer critique on that situation, as cited by The Metro.
“I think the volume of players at Chelsea could be alarming for some of the players there.
“A lot of those players won’t know where they stand and many of them will be surplus to requirements come the summer.
“Looking at [Benoit] Badiashile, he’s sitting there, a young centre-back who can’t get into the Champions League squad.
“He’s thinking, “I should be playing.” He’s probably sitting there looking at some of the players in front of him and going, “Hold on a minute, how have I been overlooked here?”
“That will be happening continuously throughout the squad and that’s not a good place to be.”
