Ben Chilwell has just taken to Twitter to apologise for his straight red card last night.
The full back said he had “slept on it” and now wanted to apologise to his teammates and fans for the red he got for pulling down Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as he closed in on goal in the second half.
You can see his apology in the Tweet embedded here:
Slept on it, and just want to apologise to my team mates and the fans. I made the decision in a split second last night and it was a mistake. I always give everything for the team and i will continue to do so. Thank you for the support 💙 pic.twitter.com/tyuccXsl1O

On the one hand it was a bad decision: it wasn’t a guaranteed goal by any means, and even if it was, Chelsea would at least have had eleven men on the pitch to try and reduce the deficit rather than ten.
On the other hand, one can see why he did it, and it’s just one of those things in football. It certainly wasn’t flagrant or stupid enough to require an apology.
It’s just one of those things in modern football we suppose.
