Ben Chilwell’s £200,000 a week contract raises questions about Mount standoff

The last few days have abounded with rumours that Ben Chilwell is going to sign a new contract, and now it seems to be so close to completion that we’re starting to get the real juicy details.

Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard has today dropped the info that it will be worth around £200,000 a week, reflecting the full back’s continued value to the team, emphasised almost as much in his absence over the last two years than by his presence on the pitch.

That takes him close to the top earners in the squad – some of whom will surely be shed this summer. But given that it’s also reportedly only a two year extension – to take the deal out from finishing in 2025 to 2027, it makes the inability to come to terms with Mason Mount (an equally important player, asking for similar wages but apparently being told he must sign a 7 year deal) more puzzling.
