The Athletic have today released a really interesting long read about Chelsea and how they got into the mess they’re in now.
There’s lots of new information in there, but one nugget that stood out in particular was the mention of the fact that Frank Lampard was being considered for the caretaker role long before Tuesday’s game against Liverpool, when he appeared in the director’s box.
The piece claims that Chelsea were considering their options – including Lampard as a caretaker – before Chelsea played the second leg of their tie against Dortmund in the Champions League a month ago. the decision to sack Graham Potter was clearly brewing ever since our form failed to pick up after the World Cup.
The Blues won that leg to qualify for the quarter finals and that bought Potter more time, but in the end our league form was so poor he had to go – and Lampard was waiting in the wings.
