The mood among a large group of Chelsea fans last summer was utterly jubilant. Finally they had found an owner who was going to buy every last one of the players they’ve read about online. Finally, they would see the super team of their dreams.
As we already know however, it’s not that easy, and in fact we now have the textbook example of how wrong things can go when you try to buy your way to success. In fact, the ownership really compounded their errors by buying yet more players in January, putting us further into a financial hole and diluting any team spirit or chemistry that was developing even further.
Those fans fans who demanded signings now demand sales. Not of their shiny new toys of course, but sales of the toys they got last year and the year before who have lost their shine.
The problem is that most of these assets are not worth a huge amount. Who are these players who are going to be sold? Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic will raise some funds, but beyond that you’re really scratching around.
Perhaps Conor Gallagher could leave – but then he would need replacing. Hardly a money making operation.
The dream of selling a bunch of players for big money is unfortunately unrealistic.
