Chelsea finally secure first team player to new contract to stop painful squad erosion

Ben Chilwell has not yet signed a new deal at Chelsea, but the fact that David Ornstein is reporting he is going to do so is enough to convince us it’s happening.

That’s great news given how important he is for the team, and it represents a rare success in recent years in getting our starters to stay with us.

We’ve seen Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger walk away on free transfers in the last year, plus Jorginho and other first team players leave for a discount fee as the end of their deal closed in.

Mason Mount looks like he will be sold this summer because a new deal can’t be agreed for him – one of the most damaging outcomes we’ve seen for the squad in years.

The fact that we managed to get Chilwell to join Reece James in signing a new deal is vital – but we’re going to have to start raising our success rate if we want to get anywhere.
