Chelsea slumped to a defeat tonight – we’re written that a few times this season – and even Frank Lampard, who has only been in his caretaker role for a few weeks, is already sounding like a broken record.
Sometimes he has questioned the efforts of his players, but today he accepted his team just came up against a really good side and lacked any confidence that they could beat them.
“I think we knew the moment we’re in. Madrid was a version of it. Brentford will always make it difficult by turning you around and being dynamic,” the Chelsea coach said in quotes picked up by Football London.
“I’m not going to sit here and bemoan the players, I’ve got sympathy for them. It wasn’t an application issue. I think with 20% more confidence we win the game, no disrespect to Brentford because they can go with anyone.”
20% more confidence is a lot more confidence. And how on Earth do you go about finding that 20%?It feels like only scoring some goals and winning some games will bring it back, and at the moment that looks impossible. The good teams are too good for us, and the bad teams are too motivated for us.
These last 6 games of the season are going to be an absolute marathon, and we’re not sure we’re ready for it.
