Chelsea manager deciding on whether to make huge gamble ahead of Real Madrid second leg

We wrote after the defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday night that it would be now or never for Frank Lampard if he wants to make a goalkeeper switch.

It would be too much to throw Edouard Mendy back in for his first game since the Autumn in the second leg, the biggest match of the season, but Lampard makes the call now, he can give Mendy the game against Brighton tomorrow to readjust.

It’s a risky call either way. Lampard is concerned with the here and now, and just getting results in these last few games of the season. If he really thinks dropping Kepa is the way to do that, it’s worth it.

But Mendy was dropped for a reason let’s not forget, and introducing more turmoil to a squad which doesn’t know which way is up anymore might be a bad idea. We all know Lampard doesn’t trust Kepa (do any of us?), but it might be a gamble that’s not worth taking in the circumstances.

Nizaar Kinsella’s piece in the Evening Standard confirms that Lampard is considering it, in any case.
