It looks increasingly like Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is the next great number 9 in world football, as he finishes his best season yet in Serie A.
It also is starting to look like he will move clubs sooner rather than later. But it won’t be to Chelsea, it seems.
Reporting in places like Caughtoffside points out that the crazy spending at Chelsea over the last 12 months has not only lumbered us with a bloated squad which needs to be trimmed, it’s also blown up our team chemistry which has caused us to drop out of the Champions League next season, and dug us into a financial hole which will preclude us from spending the vast quantity needed to secure Osimhen in the near future.
It feels like just as our goalscoring problems have reached their nadir, a top 9 has become available – but we’re not in position to take advantage of it.
