The Athletic have just dropped a rather chilling long read about Chelsea and their finances.
An interesting aspect of the whole affair is the need for speed. The piece notes that Chelsea must sell before the 30th of June if they want to be able to add the money they bring in to this season’s accounts. That will be vital for FFP accounting and similar purposes.
We would imagine some of those deals are done long before then, but it provides a pretty strong barrier for most negotiations.
In any case, making your sales early is usually a good thing regardless. It allows you to know early on what you’ve got to work with for next season.
A silly amount of money has been spent on this squad, and we should really only be looking to buy a couple of players. The sooner we know what kind of budget we have to work with, the better.
