Former striker declares this Chelsea decision “the biggest mystery of all time”

Michael Owen was on BT Sport punditry duties last night, and he declared one of Chelsea’s decisions last summer as the “biggest mystery of all time.”

Last season Chelsea had their moments but were hamstrung by a lack of goalscoring ability. In the summer they let striker Romelu Lukaku go, but did absolutely nothing in terms of trying to find a new top level striker.

Last night saw a perfect example of how they’ve been punished time and again. They created chances and did well, but couldn’t find the net, and ended up conceding twice as they desperately pushed forward.

“It’s one of the biggest mysteries of all time – how can you spend £500m and hardly bring a player in who’s going to influence the goal-scoring department?

“They look so toothless in front of goal, they don’t look like scoring,” former striker Owen said in quotes picked up by the Sun.

We can’t really explain it ourselves. Perhaps the club really thought that a washed up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was really going to to be the solution to years of goalscoring problems. Either way, their subsequent spending in other areas makes all of the summer’s moves look even more bizarre in hindsight.
