Journalist on whether Frank Lampard is ‘under serious contention’ for Chelsea job

Chelsea fans largely celebrated the return of a club legend last week when Frank Lampard was announced as the new manager.

It came from nowhere, was a total shock, and it was all very surreal for Blues fans last week as it all unfolded. The majority were very pleased with the move, even if some were not. But either way, Lampard has been instilled back as Chelsea manager, albeit on an interim basis as caretaker until the summer.

But is he in for a chance of landing the role on a permanent basis after the summer? Could be put himself in contention?

He could, but right now he is not under serious consideration, at least that is according to CBS insider Ben Jacobs writing in his latest exclusive and extensive Chelsea column for Si & Dan Talk Chelsea this week.

Jacobs believes there is one scenario that could see Lampard work himself in as a strong contender though, and that is if he wins the Champions League!

“Lampard coming in definitely lifts the mood at Cobham, and ensures time can be taken to find a permanent successor,” Jacobs said.

“At this stage, he isn’t under serious consideration for the job beyond this season. Winning the Champions League is probably his only chance of changing that, but it was made clear to Lampard when he agreed to join that Chelsea are actively looking for a replacement for Graham Potter rather than waiting to see how he fares. That’s why at the same time Lampard came in, Chelsea were meeting Luis Enrique face to face.”
