Kai Havertz got a 7/10 rating on WhoScored for his performance last night, the highest rated Chelsea player alongside Reece James.
While he didn’t get on the scoresheet, he did do his job well, and justified his inclusion. Alongside N’Golo Kante and Conor Gallagher he provided the first line of the press, and for most of the game they were really able to turn the screw on Madrid, and they all looked well drilled in which angles to take and what their pressing triggers were.
Most of our best passing moves in that first half came through nice interplay with the German dropping deep and becoming part of 1-2 passes to release runners.
In the end, we just couldn’t find the net – but we did make chances, and Havertz was a big part of that. The box midfield with him up top could be something we see repeated.
