Kante returns opens up new midfield options for Chelsea

N’Golo Kante is going to be on the bench for Chelsea today, his first appearance in a squad since August, and the first time he will be able to play under Graham Potter.

They’ve been so cautious so far – and rightly so – and they won’t be rushing him now. But the time will come soon where he’s ready to play 90 minutes.

As Potter said in his press conference yesterday, he will be “on the pitch” today as a sub, creating the possibility that he’s ready to start within the next couple of games.

That creates questions for Potter – does he keep the 343 and replace Mateo Kovacic with Kante? Does he risk a return to a 433 with Kante’s exceptional energy added to the mix?

Those questions won’t be answered today – but it won’t be long before Potter has to reveal his hand and we get to find out what he’s got planned for the Frenchman.
