Kai Havertz, after a long run as a guaranteed starter under Graham Potter, was dropped for Wednesday night’s game against Real Madrid.
That made us feel certain he would start today, but in the end he wasn’t in the squad at all.
The explanation was revealed by Frank Lampard just before kick off, as he explained:
“Kai Has had a little issue with his knee which he felt in Madrid on Wednesday night. He should be fine for Tuesday,” the coach said in quotes picked up by Football London.
It doesn’t sound serious, but equally with the score at 1-1 and Lampard looking to protect his key players for the Champions League game, the German would likely have got a decent bit of time on the pitch today, especially with the score at 1-1.
We also don’t think Havertz will start on Tuesday regardless, but we expect him to get a chance off the bench assuming Chelsea are chasing the game late on. Certainly Frank Lampard will want all of his attacking options ready and waiting to be thrown on.
