Mason Mount absence raises more questions about possible freeze-out

Frank Lampard’s arrival as caretaker manager has been seen as a critical moment for Mason Mount, who has been out of the picture in recent weeks and looks increasingly like he’s leaving this summer.

Today marks the first team that Lampard has picked in this spell and not only is Mount not in the team, he’s not in the squad at all.

It seems certain the Chelsea boss will be asked about it at some point, and he may blame it on injury or illness, but the idea that Mount is being deliberately left out because he has not signed a new contact is gaining credibility with every passing game. A pubic injury at the start of the year seemed to heal – but now he’s become invisible again.

We will have to just read Lampard’s face when he’s asked about it – but there’s no doubt he would be picking Mount if he was fit to play.
