Chelsea are in the process of deciding whether to keep Joao Felix at the club next season, and according to the Evening Standard, it’s a decision which will be heavily influenced by the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at the club.
While Felix is a real talent and has shown flashes of his ability in his months at Chelsea despite the dreadful context, Atletico Madrid are apparently “not budging” on their £88m asking price for him, making any deal extremely expensive and difficult to justify unless the club and their new coach are totally sold on him as a future star of the team.
We need to trim the squad, and some players will have to go – that’s just the reality.
In terms of pure style, Felix is not a typical Pochettino player. He’s inconsistent, not particularly physical and not a grafter – but on the other hand the new coach may feel he brings a little magic that is otherwise lacking in his squad.
