“Not sure it was wise” – Journalist questions Frank Lampard decision on 1st game back

Frank Lampard returned to football management for his first game back at the weekend, and he returned back to Chelsea, the club he totally adores.

After a successful spell as Derby manager Lampard took the reigns at Chelsea taking over from Thomas Tuchel. However, although he did enjoy some decent spells at Chelsea, things derailed fast and he was sacked.

But now Lampard is back again for a second shot, this time as interim manager until the end of the season. He has a short amount of time to prove his worth back at the club once again, and you can be sure that he’d love to put himself in contention for the full time role in the summer.

Lampard reverted to a back four on his first game back on Saturday, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Wolves, and CBS insider Ben Jacobs doesn’t think that was wide.

Writing in his exclusive and extensive Chelsea column for Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, Jacobs said: “I wasn’t too surprised to see Lampard revert to a 4-3-3 against Wolves, but I am not sure it was wise. It would be different if he had the job permanently, but with so little time before Real Madrid, and Chelsea desperate for consistency and stability, reverting to a back-four just felt like another new thing for the squad to deal with. In fairness, they are well used to a back four, it’s just there was so little turnaround time.

“Lampard actually played a 3-4-3 in a 5-2 Chelsea win at Wolves back in September 2019 – a game in which Tammy Abraham scored a hat-trick – and I do think this formation suits Chelsea better right now because it brings the best out of both Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

“It’s clear Lampard likes 4-3-3, but I don’t think he’ll be too rigid with it.”
