“One of the worst runs in the history of football” Paul Merson doesn’t have

Paul Merson’s column on Sky Sports last night saw him lay into Chelsea after a dismal 1-0 defeat.

That makes it just 4 wins in the last 21 game for the Blues, a jaw dropping series of results for a team built of expensive international players.

Merson went as far as to say it was one of the worst runs in football history given the talent on the pitch and on the bench for Chelsea. He might have a point:

“That can’t happen, it’s mind-blowing. It’s got to be one of the worst runs in the history of football with that much talent in the squad. They’re bringing on international players that have got 50 caps, not someone who has never played for their country.”

Merson also attacked the total lack of attacking patterns in the team, something which only seems to be getting worse. Again, it’s hard to disagree with him here.

“Lampard has only had a couple of days to work with them but there’s no pattern. You watch Man City and Arsenal play and you can see what’s trying to happen. With Chelsea there’s nothing there. It’s 11 individuals.”

Ultimately there are good enough players in this squad to turn things around, but as Merson says, this has reached an all time low, and there couldn’t really be further for the team to go.

  1. The team is gradually going down. With a mediocre coach, don’t see much improvement. Why start Gallagher and drop kante when you need all the points. And also, why change from back three that suits the team to a back four. Terrible.
