Potter explains Mount absence after midfielder rides the bench for 90 minutes

Mason Mount was back in the Chelsea squad for the first time in a few weeks yesterday, but even as the Blues lost 2-0 to Aston Villa he wasn’t called on by Graham Potter as the manager looked to claw a goal back.

Potter was asked about this decision after the game, and he basically said it was all a matter of fitness, with Mount’s pubic injury clearly still affecting him a little, and with only a couple of training sessions under his belt.

“We made some attacking subs and wanted to see how it all landed. Mason is coming back and only had a couple of days training,” Potter explained in quotes picked up by the Evening Standard when questioned about why he hadn’t put the two time player of the year winner into the mix.

It’s a reasonable explanation, and by full time the whole team was just a jumble of attacking players without much shape or reason. We’re not sure a half fit Mount would have made much of a difference either way.
