Potter’s strange final team selection was the nail in his coffin

Looking back at the game on Saturday against Aston Villa, which we now know was Graham Potter’s last as Chelsea boss, his team selection is even more mystifying.

The use of a back 3 composed of 2 full backs and just one central defender was so odd to begin with – and it was punished so quickly and so clearly by the mix up between Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly which allowed Aston Villa to score the opening goal that it’s hard to look past it as the final self inflicted wound of a catastrophic collapse.

We’re sure Potter had something in mind when he decided to use that setup, but looking back at it now it sums up some of the bizarre decisions he was making which only seemed to make life harder for himself. Perhaps he will look back in regret, or perhaps he will think that he played his hand as best he could, and was never given a chance by the circumstances.
