Questions about Mason Mount raised after another game on the bench

Mason Mount stayed on the bench for Chelsea for the full 90 minutes for the second game in a row.

It raised a couple of eyebrows when he didn’t appear off the bench against Aston Villa, but it was the second blank in a row today which has really made people question what’s going on.

Some are convinced he’s being frozen out as a punishment after reaching a contract stalemate with the club, while others think it’s just a Graham Potter decision based on form which his staff are keeping intact.

We are inclined to think the former, and it’s hard to imagine how a player who has been so effective over the last couple of seasons could not even come off the bench over two games where we’ve failed to score.

If he continues to be exiled, it will only become harder to deny that’s what going on, so let’s reserve out judgement.

  1. SuperFrank, what case has Mount made to deserve playing time? Seriously, I’m all ears. You seem to assume he should get the endless benefit of the doubt when he’s been out of form for most of the calendar year and seems to have allowed his protracted contract negotiations distract him from the job at hand. That’s just on the field, but when you consider the fact that the club want him on a long-term deal and rumor is he doesn’t want to commit his future to Chelsea, then it really does beg the question of why he should be in the squad let alone on the field for us. In fact, I think it’s easier to make the case for Pulisic to get playing time at this point than Mount, but not sure you’ve ever been particularly rational when it comes to those two—one can do no wrong and one came do no right, lol!
