Surprising tactical gamble works in impressive first half against Real Madrid

Whatever happens in the second half, that first half was actually pretty good from Chelsea.

Maybe our standards have just been made impossibly low by the events of this season, but overall we defended well and created two great chances to score, as well as a few other dangerous moments which could have gone our way.

The system chosen by Frank Lampard raised a lot of eyebrows, as he effectively dropped all his attacking players in a game he has to score two in. But playing 4 central midfielders worked well – Chelsea were able to pressure Madrid high up, and also string together some passing moves when they had the ball.

Of course the downside is a lack of finishing power – but playing the attacking players hadn’t helped much over the last few months in that department anyway.

The ball didn’t drop for us in the end, but you can’t say the game hasn’t been more in our favour than most expected.
