Kai Havertz has played more minutes than any outfield Chelsea player this season, racking up 2898 minutes in all competitions, just 7 minutes behind overall leader Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Havertz has managed a paltry 9 goals in those 41 appearances, 34 of them starts.
His natural game is not as a forward, we know that. The idea is that he plays up top but drops deep and pushes out wide to create space for others. Sadly, it’s an idea that just hasn’t worked, by and large – it’s not like there are a bunch of other players scoring in the team while he sets them up.
New coach Mauricio Pochettino now has a few seasons’ worth of evidence that Havertz just doesn’t function in that role, and that a new solution has to be found. He’s got a few months before he takes over, and we’re sure his priority will be solving our problems in front of goal – starting with Kai.
