The Athletic’s football podcast did a feature about Chelsea today, with the imminent appointment of Mauricio Pochettino the main topic.
While there have been jokes in the last few days that the former Spurs boss might back out of the deal as he starts to realise what he’s getting himself into, on the podcast Simon Johnson said quite the opposite.

Things are truly at rock bottom now, and the only way is up. Expectations will never be lower. Pochettino will have the last few weeks of this season to assess his squad, then the summer to take control and get this team to where it needs to be.
If he has extreme demands, the club aren’t really in any position to turn them down. Everything needs to change.
“If you’re Pochettino, you’re looking around thinking ‘this is ideal’,” Johnson commented.
“He can mould this into what he wants and get met with very little resistance, because the club is broken now.”
He makes a good point, although we were saying the same about Frank Lampard a couple of weeks ago, and look how that has worked out.
